The moment that billions of people across the world have been waiting for has almost arrived! Now, for those of you that may not know what this moment may is, don’t worry, just ask someone near you. They are most likely to answer you by excitedly screaming: "The World Cup!" The world's largest sporting event will start on June 11th when the host South Africa takes on Mexico. 32 of the world's best teams will be facing off in the month long tournament to decide which country deserves the title as the globe's best soccer team. The partying and euphoria will not be limited to South Africa however. The streets in the cities of South America, Europe, Africa and Asia will be full of nervous soccer fans, who will be surely watching the action closely.....

Ottawa raises lending limit to keep student loans flowing

The federal government has rushed through last-minute changes that give it room to lend an extra $2 billion to post-secondary students this fall. Legislation caps the amount Ottawa can have outstanding at any one time at $15 billion, but documents show that limit was set to be breached this month.

International:
More than 8 million Pakistanis still need daily help: UN

Now that officials have had more time to study the crisis in Pakistan, the United Nations now thinks it will take much more than previously estimated to lift the country back on its feet. The UN estimates between eight to 10 million people are still in need of daily help, and is preparing to ask member nations to give an amount that will be at least double the US$460 million it requested in August.

Health:
Faster vaccine production needed: WHO official

The vaccine used to combat the H1N1 flu pandemic was effective, but health authorities will need to speed up production during the next global outbreak, according to a World Health Organization official. David Wood says that while vaccines became available six months after the virus was identified, it was still too late for some countries. The WHO declared the pandemic over in August after it killed more than 18,000 people worldwide.

Sports:
Figure skating champ Kim leaving Toronto to train in L.A.

Olympic figure skating champion Kim Yu-na is moving her training base from Toronto to Los Angeles, her management agency says. Kim had trained with Canadian Brian Orser in Toronto since 2006, and won South Korea's first Olympic medal in figure skating at this year's Vancouver Games. But Kim and Orser split last month for reasons that remain unclear.

Man accused of trying to sell neighbour’s belongings

An Ontario man is facing theft charges after allegedly trying to sell his neighbour's belongings at a yard sale. Police in Peterborough say they were called to a home when an area resident recognized some of the items.

Business:
Canada’s jobless rate to stay near 8 per cent, economists say

Statistics Canada is set to release the latest job figures this week, and with modest economic growth in the second quarter, economists say Canadians should expect the jobless rate to stay near eight per cent. Canada lost about 9,300 jobs in July, marking the first monthly decline since December 2009.
